Creating and Managing Your Online Identity

Last week, I attended Susanne Markgren’s presentation on Creating and Managing Your Online Identity: Tips for Success at the ACRL/NY New Librarians Discussion Group.

During this inspiring and informative discussion, Susanne shares 10 steps for a better online identity.

These are just some of the points that came up during the presentation:

  • accept that you have a online identity whether you want one or not
  • ask yourself what your goals are for creating an online identity
  • think carefully about how you are going to brand yourself
  • keeping your professional and personal online identities separate may be impossible, so err on the side of professionalism in anything you do online
  • set up online alerts with your name to see what is out there about you
  • create an online portfolio
    • this is more than a resume, it is a place to showcase your work, experience, talents, etc.
  • once you have your online portfolio, share the link
    • put the link in your email signature, on your business card, in your LinkedIn page, etc.
  • if you have a LinkedIn page, keep it clean and you don’t need to put everything on it, instead steer people towards your online portfolio
